Making Mistakes... and learning from them.

"The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one." ~Elbert Hubbard, The Note Book, 1927

"The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." ~John Powell
Several years ago I realized that I seemed to keep making the same mistakes in my life over and over.  So I decided to first understand why I made the choices I did, then admitting my mistakes in order to heal and grow.

Then I started getting advice from people I admired, trust and looked to; because I didn't want to make more mistakes; especially in my personal relationships.

Most of the advice and insight was very good for me because it focused on the truth about both myself and the people around me.  Helping me to become strong enough to reject negative influences and to set higher standards for the people I now allow in my life.

The downside to having insight is that knowledge changes things... both positive and negatively.  What I mean is that somethings we shouldn't know because it changes our actions, reactions and the direction we take in our lives.  Knowledge effects our choices both good and bad.

I've recently learned that even with insight, understanding and knowledge; that I still make mistakes.  We all do.  However it's how we accept our mistakes; learn from them and become a better person from being honest with ourselves... that matters most in our journey through life.
"A man should never be ashamed to own when he has been in the wrong, which is but saying ... that he is wiser today than he was yesterday." ~Alexander Pope, in Swift, Miscellanies

  1. It's only a mistake if we don't eventually learn from it.
Some of it is habit - patterns we just can't break.

  2. I always hope I will learn from my mistakes. Lord knows I make plenty of them. Ha!! The most frustrating ones are those I repeat over and over again. Sigh!!
What hurts the most if those who can't seem to forgive an honest or well meaning mistake. Some things just happen.

  4. What's that other quote - The first one I make may be a mistake, but each subsequent one is a personal choice. So I guess, sometimes, or often, I choose to do things that others classify as mistakes. After all who gets to judge what is a mistake and what isn't? If I regret an error, a lack of judgement, a mistake, then I need to learn from it, apply what I've learned and move on. Sometimes I've made a mistake in a recipe and created something more delicious than originally intended. Just my ramblings.......which may be a mistake, lol!!!!

  5. Hi all. I have found this wonderful website because I am feeling bad about my mistakes. I feel like I lived my entire life making them. I have many regrets such as dropping out of nursing school, getting divorced, dating wrong men, moving to Florida, leaving my friends and family, quitting several jobs, buying a home in Florida that I lost money on, choosing the wrong career, and the list goes on. The 3 biggest ones are my divorce, dropping out of school, and moving to Florida. These mistakes have actually destroyed my life. I feel trapped in my life of mistakes. I don't know how to cope, but it sure felt nice to read on here. Thank you for helping me feel better about all of this. Hopefully someday, I will be able to forgive myself.
