Half Full & Aloha Friday Question

"Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Love.  Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself." ~Og Mandino
Half Full Friday is a series of weekly posts that Eye Girl originally started in June 2009.  Now the it is hosted by Sprinkles at Wyldechylde.  We believe that a lot of our happiness is determined by our attitude about the things that happen to us. So by participating, we are deciding to see the glass as half full, instead of half empty. We are choosing to concentrate on the positives, instead of dwelling on the negatives. Our Half Full Friday posts are a way to do just that. They are a list of the things in our life that have brought us happiness over the past week. We are determined to find the something good in every day. Are you?
"Happiness is spiritual, born of truth and love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it." ~Mary Baker Eddy
For the next week, we challenge you to keep a list of at least one thing that brought you happiness each day.
I'm Happy and Thankful for many things every day... especially this week:
  • For honestly being very hopeful and happy every day!
  • For 'trusting' each day things will work out in my life!
  • For seeing old friends and classmates soon!
"Love with your whole being all the days of your life.  Your reward will be True Happiness." ~unknown
It's also "ALOHA FRIDAY" Everyone!!  If you want to join in the fun? Post your own question on your blog and leave your link at the Aloha Friday post at An Island Life. Then you can visit the other participants if you wish...It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends or see what people are thinking about this week and join in a conversation or two if you like.
"The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved -- loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves." ~Victor Hugo
My question:  When my sons were younger it seemed easier to show them how much I love them.  Hugs, doing things with them, daily conversations and saying 'I love you' everyday.
How do you show Love to older children who have started their own lives and moved far away?

My answer:  I try to think of ways to 'show' them how much I love and miss them by sending them 'care' packages, messages, 'occasional' phone calls and visits.  I don't want to 'bug' them too much because I know they are very busy.
Although I wanted them to start their own lives and am very proud of them, it's still hard having them so far away.  However knowing my sons love me and that they know how much I love them back, makes it so much easier!

  1. Very interesting question - how DO I show love to our grown children. Even with the two who live in town with their families, we use all the modern conveniences to connect several times a week. With the ones who live far away - we enjoy facebook chat and FaceTime. The girls and I enjoy coffee times at a local cafe; our son drops in often with one or the other grand and we chat a while. We have shown a lot of love through financial support in horrible times, thanking God that He has enabled us, though we didn't have an easy life either.

Lots to think on with this question!!!

  2. I have two sons and one daughter, My daughter and I are very close, youngest son lives in Spain and only see him occasionally, the eldest have severed all knowledge of me so I don't get to see his three children . How can you like someone who writes you abusive text? but the unconditional love I suppose is there somewhere. I have accepted the situation, but WILL NOT GIVE UP HOPE.

  3. Now you have stumped me! I have no children and all my dogs want are bones and a pat on the head. Think your sons might like a bone? :)

They love you and you love them.. bottom line. All that matters. Have a great weekend my friend.

  4. I have a grown son and I try to text him once a week. See how things are going, catch up, things like that. I always say I love you when I sign off. We talk about once every two or three months!!

  6. Hi Coreen, Again, it is great to hear from you. Your life has changed --and I'm sure, for the better!!!!!

One thing about BOYS... You do not want to smother them or call/contact them too much. Work out a time that is good for them--when you can call maybe on a regular basis. Sunday parents call on a Sat. or Sun. morning... It's up to you and your sons. Little care packages or gifts or even a piece of money is nice --on occasion. AND--when you do talk to them or write them, make sure that you say that you love them. They'll know...

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. Beautiful post. I will have to write down the challenge and put on my fridge to remember. I like it.

I'm glad you gave the answer. I feel when my children are older, I'd do the same. Even offer to babysit if they have kids :)

    Aloha!

  10. My kids are 10, 13, 15, and 18 - I always hug them and say "I love you" but I also try to show them my love by doing special things for them now and then and praising them when I see them do good things. I would probably fall apart if any of my kids move far away when they are grown.

  11. Your happy and thankful list is always a pleasure to read. ;)

As for showing your older kids your love, sounds like you're doing just that - I'll be tucking that advice away for the future! :)

  12. That's really sweet you send your boys care packages! I always wanted a mom who was like that but she's not. I think part of the reason is because she doesn't want to bug us since we have our own lives. I live in the same town so it's different for me but she doesn't talk to my brother's very often at all.

  13. Hi Coreen,

You shared another inspiring post. I can feel the optimism on your blog. Sometimes the possibility of things to happen in our life depends on our strong belief and optimistic view in life. I am glad you are always looking forward to a new day everday.

I know your sons know that you love them so much. You can manifest it my sending cards or letters to them.

    have a great weekend!

    Hugs,
    Sey
