"Passion is universal humanity. Without it religion, history, romance and art would be useless." ~ Honor de Balzac

I’ve seen a lot of messages floating around the VA Forums about what skills to offer, comparing ones’ own skills to others’ and how would they be able to make it in the VA world with their particular of skills. That one doesn’t have this skill or that skill, and won’t be able to compete with others who have those skills. My question is… Why would you want to compete? Why not find your passion and do that?
Be Passionate
Darlene of D. Victoria Virtual Assistance creates A Virtual Perception Podcasts. From listening to her Podcasts, you can tell she’s passionate about what she does. It shows in every episode she loves every minute of it. Can I do what she does? Maybe, but I’m not passionate about it, and probably wouldn’t be very good at it. We’re not in competition.
Because she’s not passionate about bookkeeping, she wouldn’t want to compete with me. My passion is to apply my bookkeeping expertise to help business owners do just that. My other passions are Organization and Systems, and helping others find their way. All of these things are interrelated.
"Chase down your passion like it's the last bus of the night." ~ Glade Byron Addams
Love what you do!
When I started my first business a dozen years ago, I didn’t remember much about the bookkeeping that I learned in Business School. That first year was pretty rough when I went to the accountant with our taxes. He recommended QuickBooks, and an Accounting class I could take at the University that really sparked my interest. I continued on with my business, and found myself being sucked into the bookkeeping part of making the business run. I found out that I LOVED bookkeeping, and that second year when I went to the accountant, with the books in hand, and the tax forms mostly filled out, he said I had a knack for it.
Fast forward a few years when I was looking for a job and put QuickBooks experience on my resume (because by then I knew it backwards and forwards) and I landed a job with a small business. It was then that I became passionate about bookkeeping, and helping this business owner understand his financial picture.
Fast Forward a few more years, and I’m getting into the VA world, almost by accident. The opportunity literally dropped into my inbox, and I went zooming off to an unknown future, away from a job and commute I disliked. See, this job had nothing to do with bookkeeping. Numbers and sales goals, yes, but not bookkeeping. I was ill more often, had accidents, and a general dislike of the people I was dealing with and the situation I was in. I was doing my employer a disservice by going through the motions.
Today, I help others; by get organized, put systems in place, and understand their financial picture. I love what I do, and I’m passionate about it.

A wonderful word thanks for sharing a lovely post.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week-end.
Yvonne.
i agree with slomler...passion is huge...and if you dont love what yo do you will not get the same results as someone who does...
ReplyDeleteIt is hard for many to realize money isn't a draw to happiness. I chased it for most of my life, but now do only what I feel is right to make me happy, and to be able to share this happiness with others.
ReplyDeleteI think this would be better than making all the resolutions that get broken a week later in January-follow your passion! Great post!
ReplyDeleteThat is excellent advice! I happen to love what I do.
ReplyDeleteI love that statement: Do what you love and love what you do.... One of my sons struggled with finding a 'passion' in his life---and to this day, he still doesn't seem to have one. He lacks ambition --and I think that part of that is because he doesn't have something to be passionate about...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Coreen, for another thought-provoking blog.
Hugs,
Betsy
Thanks for sharing this story! I agree this is thought provoking

Ooooh. My eyes lit up towards the end of that article! You totally made me beam inside out. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful statement!, you're right!, but usually we forget..., we live in a hurry!.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right! We should all try to remember this!
ReplyDeleteWell, yes,in an ideal world, we would all do what we are passionate about, it's too bad we can't because of having to pay the bills. But we can have that as our goal and take steps to achieve it.
ReplyDeleteI'm discovering that living your passion is really living.
ReplyDeleteSo completely true!! I'm always telling my students to find their joy and do that for a living. Without joy & passion any career with be incredibly tedious and dull.
ReplyDeleteA great and encouraging post Coreen. I needed the boost. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post and so true! I too have written about passion quite a bit on my blog and as a guest on other's blogs as well. I think it's so important for us all to really chase our passions in life, or else we're missing out on becoming the best we can be. I am graduating this May and am taking this idea of finding my passion into my job search- I want to love what I do!! -Staying "optimistic" that this will work out! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the uplifting words! Hope you have a great day!
Gotta love what you do...it ADDS SO MUCH to HOW you do it.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff!
agree with you more than 100%!!! brilliant post!
ReplyDeleteYou are right that enjoying what you do makes a huge difference. Often successful people are truly passionate about what they do. It is a good way to live life for sure!
