"I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion, and elimination of ignorance, selfishness, and greed." ~Dalai Lama

Let's dig deeper into the meaning of these words.
Altruism is the unselfish concern for the welfare and well being of others. It is the active practice of love and compassion. Altruism is demonstrated in daily life by simple acts such as feeding the hungry and providing directions to a stranger in need. Altruism focuses on a motivation to help others or a want to do good a good thing, without a concern for reciprocation or reward. Altruism is related to heroism; however it lacks an element of risk to the helper. Research indicates that altruism is triggered by empathy and driven by compassion. (source heroic inagination.org)
Love is an emotion of strong affection and personal attachment. In philosophical context, love is a virtue representing all of human kindness, compassion, and affection. (source wikipedia.org)
Compassion is also a virtue, one in which the emotional capacities of empathy and sympathy for others, are regarded as a part of love itself, and a cornerstone of greater social interconnectedness and humanism. It is foundation to the highest principles in philosophy, society, and personally.. (source wikipedia.org)
What do you think the impact on society would be if these 'words' were 'lived in daily action' by more people? I believe the impact would be less conflict and more PEACE in the world!
Dalai Lama's Peace Prize Acceptance Speech“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” ~Dalai Lama
Well said!!! Altruism, love and compassion is the recipe for a fulfilled life.

I think many forget about these in our fast paced lives. Yesterday should be a remender to many of how we should embrace all around us.
ReplyDeleteYes, love is a necessity - to give and to receive! Another good one!
ReplyDeleteIf all people would practice Altruism, then we will live in a world full of love and peace.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post to start the week Coreen.
Take care,
Sey
A wonderful quote from the Dalai Lama! It is very much like what Jesus teaches us. Yes, if everyone did this, there would be no war probably. But, sadly, I don't believe that will ever happen. Nevertheless, we all need to think of others before ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThe world would be a better place! Some day we'll practice all of that and understand the meaning of agape love.
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts.. I never left without taking any good messages from your post. Thanks.. Have a nice day!

The tenets of Tibetan Buddhism are all beautiful virtues to live by. If only compassion, forgiveness and kindness could overtake greed and selfishness.

ReplyDeleteVisiting from Alex's blog and I have to say I love it here and look forward to many return visits. I absolutely agree, there would be more peace in this world and less hate if more people lived by these words. You have a powerful, inspirational site and thank you for sharing with us.

Hello there! Alex C. sent me your way ~ :) What a great post. I constantly strive to be more altruistic in nature. You're absolutely right - if only more people really lived these words...
ReplyDeleteVery positive post. Alex sent me too.
ReplyDeleteI think our world would transform into something amazing.
ReplyDeleteI've just popped over from Alex's blog. Nice to meet you! I love this post, and it's very timely for me. Just been turned on to the documentary "I Am," by the director of Liar, Liar and The Nutty Professor. (Too lazy to look up his name, ugh!) But the message in his film mirrors what you and the Dali Lama say here.
ReplyDeleteThanks for driving home points I think the Universe wants me to hear!
Sorry I missed this Monday. :(
ReplyDeleteI think life would no longer be as we now know it. Imagine unselfish compassion for all humanity, sorta sounds like heaven to me :)
