Every Monday Matters ~ Thank a Teacher!!!

"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." ~Henry Adams

DID YOU KNOW?
- There are 3.3 million teachers in the U.S.—2.6 million teach K-12.

- Almost 50% of K-12 teachers leave the profession by their fifth year.

- A $15 billion per year investment--or a 30% raise for all K-12 teachers is necessary to make teacher compensation competitive with other professions requiring similar levels of education.

- In 37 states, K-12 teacher salaries do not keep pace with inflation.

- $7 billion a year is the cost of teacher turnover.

- One of the most important factors in determining a child's performance is the quality of his or her teachers.
"The task of the excellent teacher is to stimulate "apparently ordinary" people to unusual effort. The tough problem is not in identifying winners: it is in making winners out of ordinary people." ~K. Patricia Cross
TAKE ACTION TODAY
+ Identify a teacher you want to thank—your child’s teacher, a friend or neighbor who teaches, a teacher at a local school, or a teacher of your own.

+ Show this teacher your appreciation by: Writing/emailing a thank-you note; Bringing a gift like homemade cookies, handpicked flowers, or something you know they will like.

+ Organize a class Appreciation Jar. Give every student a piece of paper and have them list all the reasons why their teacher is special to them. Stuff the papers in the jar and let the teacher open one per day.

+ Volunteer in the classroom or at a local school and help with special projects.
"The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth." ~Dan Rather
YOU MATTER
Youth are the future of our world, and teachers spend more waking hours with them than their parents do. Showing appreciation to teachers lets them know they are valued and respected—you don’t have to be a student or even a parent of a student to show your appreciation. Remember, teachers help shape everyone’s world…including yours.
"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job." ~Donald D. Quinn

What is the Every Monday Matters program?

Monday used to be the least favorite day of the week, but that is changing. EMM is based on the idea that Every Monday people can make a difference in their life and the lives of those around them. No matter how big or small the actions, they matter. And not only do people have the power to make change, they have a social responsibility to do so. Not out of guilt, but out of an appreciation for every living thing in the world. Together, each person can make a difference in the world and raise the collective consciousness, thereby creating a legacy worth participating in…one Monday at a time.

  1. Yes, I totally agree! My huisband is in the teaching profession in two of his jobs. But that's beside the point. Teachers are horribly underpaid for what they do. Why do actors and athletes make so much? O.K., I can see athletes, because they put themselves in danger and can only work when they are very young. But actors? Comne on!! Teachers have our most porecious resource to mold, our future. They should have one of the higest pay scales in the country!!

  2. My DIL is a teacher (1st grade) and I tell her how proud I am of her all the time. Would you believe none of her students bothered to give her a gift this past Christmas? Nothing!? No card even!!! Shameful!!

  7. Many teachers say they don't do it for the money, or they would be doing something else.As a teacher you are also forever a student, and it is sad like with most other businesses you aren't compensated for further education.I have 9 years of college and would enjoy returning for more.

  10. Hi, George and I were both teachers.. He taught Math and Computers in college for many years. I taught Choral Music and Math in high school for several years --before going into fulltime churchwork in Christian Education.

YES---teachers do matter. BUT--our public schools in this country need some revamping.. I don't like the fact that teachers get 'tenure' --and then slack up on their teaching, knowing that they cannot be fired. That obviously is not ALL of them --but it does happen. I think teachers SHOULD be rated and paid every year on what they do THAT year...

I also think that the schools should allow young retirees (like us) to go back into the classroom --teaching from their experiences. When I retired early and then when George retired, we both thought about doing some teaching (George especially is a fabulous teacher) --but the laws are so ridiculous that they wouldn't take us without all of the stupid certification classes, etc... Oh Well. They missed out on getting some good teachers.

NOW--I'll get off my soap box and say that there are many fabulous teachers who are not appreciated like they should be. SO --let's all THANK a TEACHER.

    HUGS,
    Betsy

  12. Interesting stats Coreen. Teachers do not get nearly half of the respect they deserve. Blessings.

  13. I love this post! As a teacher, the amount of teachers dropping out of the profession terrifies me. We have to do a better job of preparing them for the realities of the job!

  14. My daughter is a high school English teacher and she is almost finished getting her Master's in English! She loves her work but in my opinion she doesn't get paid enough! I work as a Teacher Assistant in 1st grade(for 25 years) and you wouldn't believe what I make. It's below poverty level.:((

  15. Most people wouldn't believe the pressure on children entering Kindergarten. As a preschool teacher, we have lots to teach even the youngest children and our pay is a joke. Pretty soon, we'll be required to have a Bachelor's degree to work in childcare....and we have no hope for compensation.

It doesn't help that we're too often seen as nothing more than glorified babysitters, either. So, yes, let teachers, all teachers, know they're appreciated!

    Great post!

  18. You always find the most interesting facts!

I had someone suggest that I should become a teacher. Yeah, not so much... It's a noble profession but not something I'm interesting in doing.
